Tucked under a staircase at the north end of the plaza, Tokujo is one of Nihonmachi's busiest eateries. This little 45-seater eatery serves do-it-yourself Japanese-style barbecue, commonly known as yakiniku, as well as shabu shabu and sukiyaki plus a variety of sushi, sashimi and grilled items.
With yakiniku as its specialty, Tokujo is certainly not a new face on Bangkok's restaurant scene. Previously occupying a small unit in a non-descript Sukhumvit condominium for more than 10 years, Tokujo has been well cherished by discerning yakiniku aficionados, including top politicians and pop stars.
After moving to this new and more attractive location, the restaurant still uses its old, 150-item menu. We went for the DIY barbecue dining and were very pleased with a variety of meat (mostly local but of a truly impressive quality), which came with reasonable price tags.

Tokujo offers a variety of raw meat for DIY barbecue.
To make sure that diners get the genuine taste of the meat (and not the sauce), none of the items for the tabletop BBQ are ever marinated. Best-selling gyu karubi, or high grade beef rib-eye (160 baht), boasted decent marbling when rare and offered a nice meaty chew when cooked. Another beef choice worth ordering is gyu rosu, or beef loin (160 baht), which arrived in pretty thick slabs and was deliciously succulent, while the exclusively imported Argentinian ox tongue (140 baht) was pleasantly tender with a pleasant crunch.
At some yakiniku restaurants, pork and chicken are there just to cater to those who don't eat beef. So most of the time these choices of protein aren't of the primest quality and can be stiff and tasteless.
But it's a different story here. The pork loin (110 baht) that we had was so succulent that it easily won the hearts of beef lovers, while chicken wings (100 baht) - totally deboned - were juicy and flavourful.
Tokujo also has a number of set meals (110-250 baht). You can choose bento, grilled items, sashimi
